Q & A

Do you offer FREE pick-up service ?

Yes, we offer FREE pick-up service to our customers in the greater Reykjavik area and Keflavik international airport.  Please put pick-up information in the reservation, - flight number / arrival time or hotel name.  Our employee will pick you up and give you a ride to our office to pick-up your rental car.  This service is available every day from 8:00 - 18:00.

Where do I get the best price ?
Our best prices are always online, so the cheapest and easiest way to book a camper van is using our website.
How is the price calculated ?

It is very simple, - you pay low season price for low season days, and high season price for high season days. Note,- there is an error in the online booking system so if you are booking a camper van for a time period that crosses different price season, chances are that the price is wrong.  Please contact us by email - info@happycampers.is .  ( We are working hard to fix this problem )

Where are your pick-up and return location ?

Our workstation is in Rofabær 9, Reykjavik.  This is our only workstation and the only place you can pick-up and return the campervan.

Do you offer emergency breakdown assistance ?

We offer a free 24/7 roadside assistance service for all of our customers. Just call our number +354 821 6386 or + 354 821 4386 and we will find a solution to your problem as soon as possible.

Where can we park / stay overnight ?

You are allowed to stay / park wherever you like, - as long as you are not on private land.  You do not need to  stay on designated camping grounds.

Is it possible to pick-up or return the car outside of opening hours ?

No, - we are only open for pick-up and return everyday from 8:00 - 18:00. For any special requests, please contact us at info@happycampers.is

Do you offer FREE drop-off service to Keflavik airport ?

NO, we do NOT offer drop-off service to Keflavik international airport.  We DO offer FREE drop-off service WHITHIN the greater Reykjavik area.  Most of our clients go to a hotel / motel in Reykjavik or the Central Bus Station where you can buy a Fly-Bus ticket to Keflavik airport.

Is Theft Protection (TP) available ?

Theft Protection (TP) is included in our basic insurance, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). Terms and conditions of the CDW insurance can be found on our website.  CDW is a Motor hull insurance that compensates for the damage, destruction and loss of the vehicle.  CDW does not cover personal belongings lost, damaged or stolen.

Do I need a sleeping bag ?

No, you do not NEED a sleeping bag but please consider the following: included in the rental price is the necessary bedding (sheet, pillow, pillow case, blanket and a comforter). For some people, the comforter is not enough for to keep them warm during colder nights. We therefore advice that you bring your own sleeping bag if you tend to get cold or if you plan on traveling in Iceland in the winter.  You can also rent sleeping bags from us if you do not bring your own.

What kind of insurance do you offer ?

Collision Damage Waiver ( CDW ) is included in the rental price, which limits the driver's liability to a certain amount. The liability amount is EUR 2.000,- for each accident.  Please review the terms & conditions before booking a rental car.

Super Collision Damage Waiver ( SCDW ) reduces the lessee´s / driver´s liability further than CDW.  The libility amount reduces from EUR 2.000,-  to EUR 500,- for each accident. This is an optional uppgrade of the CDW insurance.

Gravel Protection ( GP ) is an optional damage waiver which covers damages to the front wind screen, headlights and the car body when gravel or rocks get thrown at the rental car by another car.

What is fuel service fee ?

If the rental car is not returned with a full tank of fuel, we will charge the renter for the fuel + EUR 50 service fee fo filling it up.

What does the rental price include ?

The rental price includes unlimited milage, 25,5 % VAT tax, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), beddings ( sheet, 2 pillows, 2 duvets, all cutlery, pot, etc.) - basically everything you need to cook, eat and sleep in the camper van.  Please review terms and conditions before booking a rental car.

I made a booking online but have not received a confirmation e-mail. What should I do ?

Confirmation e-mail should arrive to customers no later than 24 hours after the booking took place. If you have not received confirmation, please check the follwing:

Did you finalize the booking process ?

Did the confirmation e-mail go to your junk mail folder (spam) ?

If you have checked the above factors, please send us an e-mail to info@happycampers.is with your name, arrival and pick-up dates and type of vehicle and we will check your booking and reply to you within 24 hours.

Where is the best place to get groceries?

There are several good supermarkets close to our office in Reykjavik. We recomment either Krónan or Bónus, as they are the two cheapest options. The closest stores would be here and here.

Do I need to have a credit card with me when I pick up the car ?

Yes, you will need a credit card for payment.

Where will I find you at the Keflavik airport ?

Our Happy Campers employee will wait for you in the arrival hall at the airport, holding a sign with the Happy Campers logo and your name on it. Please approach our employee and tell him/her your name.  They will take you by the shuttle bus to our office in Reykjavik; an approx. 30 - 40 minute drive from the airport.

Is it possible to make changes to my reservation ?

Yes you can make changes any time you want. Please let us know as soon as possible by sending us an e-mail to info@happycampers.is.  Remember to include your reservation number, which you can find in the confirmation e-mail.  There is no fee for this service.

Does your camper vans have toilets and shower ?

Our Happy Campers camper vans DO NOT have toilets or shower facilities.  The reason is that our goal is to make our camper vans as simple as possible to drive and operate.  Showers and travel toilets require a lot of space and is complicated to operate.  But do not worry, in Iceland there are many gas stations and small shops and restaurants where you can use the bathroom facilities.  You can also find our famous geothermal swimming pools in almost every small village around the island where you can swim, shower, go the hot tubs etc. for a very small fee.  Most campgrounds also offer good facilites for tourists to use.  For this reason, we decided to not have toilets and showers in our camper vans.

Is it safe to use my credit card on your website?

Yes, when you start the booking process, you are transferred to the servers of Rent Centric, one of the largest and most respected car rental systems in the world. Their advanced security system guarantees the protection of sensitive information with the following actions:

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included in the rental price.

How should I plan my trip?

There are many good resources online regarding traveling in Iceland. You can take a look at our blog, Safetravel.is, iceland.is, Iheartreykjavik.net, inspiredbyiceland.com, and other trusted sources of information. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask us about anything, either by mail or on facebook.

What kind of campers do you have ?

Actual make and model may vary and is subject to availability at the time of delivery and we therefore reserve the right to deliver a similar vehicle. Similar vehicle means your rental vehicle  will fullfil the requirements of the vehicle  class and vehicle type you booked. Not all our camper vans are brand new, but they are all well maintained and in very good condition. We offer 5 camper van classes and you can find more information on each class on our website.

What is the minimum age for renting a camper van ?

Minimum age is 21 years old. ( based on birth year )

Is there a minimum rental period ?

Yes, the minimum rental is 3 nights.

When will you charge my credit card ?

All rentals are paid upon arrival. Payment is by credit card only and the credit card is charged when you pick up the car.

Is it possible to add a third driver ?

You can have two (2) additional drivers.

I will arrive after opening hours, can you still pick me up ?

No, if you arrive after opening hours, we cannot pick you up from the airport. Most people choose to spend a night at a hotel/motel in Keflavik.  We will then pick you up the next morning and drive you to our office in Reykjavik.  We reccommend Bed & Breakfast Keflavik airport (http://www.bbkeflavik.com/).  They will pick you up at the airport at any time and the motel is loceted only 3 minutes away from the airport.

Can I pay in cash, with a debit card or bank transfer ?

Travel Like a Local

One of the most frustrating things about traveling to foreign countries is that you don't know the country like the locals do. After all, we all want to maximize our travel experience by visiting places that are popular among the locals. You do your best researching the culture and interesting places, but most of the information comes from tourist guide books or from random people on the internet. There are some exciting websites, like Rent a Local Friend, that connects travelers with locals, but it can be expensive and limited to only the major cities around the world. So what can you do? My suggestion is to get to know the locals in Iceland as not be shy about asking them for tips and recommendations. Here are a few tips on how to get to know Icelanders and what to ask them to maximize your experience in Iceland:

Use Social Media

Use travel-related social media platforms such as Couchsurfing, TravBuddy, WAYN, TripAdvisor, or Be Welcome. Even though these social media platforms won't solve all of your problems, it's a good place to start your search for local information.

Don't By Shy!

Don't worry, Icelanders are super friendly and always willing to have a chat with people who are interested in their country. You will probably never see any of these people again, so try not to be scared of opening up and starting a conversation.

Start in Reykjavik

If possible, give yourself a day or two in Reykjavik before you begin exploring the rest of the country. Especially if you can spend a Friday or Saturday night in Reykjavik, you will find a LOT of Icelanders who are willing and eager to talk to strangers. Go to coffee shops, bars, museums, or the flea market to find a lot of locals with some time to spare to help you out.

Leave Time for Spontaneity

If booking tours is your thing, we won't judge. However, we at least recommend that you leave some time for exploring things that you could not plan in your online research and reading through tourist brochures. If a local recommends something really exciting and unexpected, it is very disappointing to realize that you did not leave any time for spontaneity in your plans!

Ice Breakers!

You're in Iceland, so you will need to have some ice breakers ready, right? Learn some basic sentences in Icelandic and locals will be really impressed. No matter how much you butcher it, just the fact that you tried will be appreciated by us Icelanders. Our favorite blogger, I Heart Reykjavik has a really great "Learn Icelandic" episodes where she goes over everything from simple greetings to how to pronounce the names of volcanos!

So, in conclusion, don't miss the opportunity to get to know Iceland like a local! Especially if you will only visit Iceland once in your lifetime, making the most of the experience is crucial. Get to know the locals, who are always willing to help, and travel like a true Icelander :)
